MTV Video Music Awards 2021 Highlights

The MTV Video Music Awards just went down last night in New York City. The show was hosted by Doja Cat, marking the first time a nominee for Video of the Year hosted the same ceremony.

Let's take a look at some of the highlights from the show.

Justin Bieber, who picked up nine nominations and took home two awards, including Artist of the Year, was joined by The Kid Laroi to open the show by performing "Stay". Bieber stayed on stage to perform "Ghost" on his own.

Olivia Rodrigo -- winner of three awards including Song of the Year -- showed up to perform "good 4 u" off her hit album Sour.

Kacey Musgraves performed "star-crossed" from her recently released album of the same name on a very cool set, filled with fire and neon hearts.

Lil Nas X tied Olivia Rodrigo and BTS for most awards won on the night with three, including his win for Video of the Year. He performed "Industry Baby" and then was joined on stage by Jack Harlow for "Montero".

Nominees Shawn Mendes and Tainy came out to perform their recent hit single "Summer of Love".

Host and nominee Doja Cat added a third job to her list: performer. She did a combo performance of "Been Like This" and "You Right".

Machine Gun Kelly, who won the award for Best Alternative, performed his recent hit single "papercuts", backed on drums by Travis Barker, as per usual.

Alicia Keys and Swae Lee did a performance of "LaLa" and then Keys did a very cool performance of "Empire State of Mind" with the New York City skyline in the background.

Finally, legendary rock band Foo Fighters, who received the well-deserved MTV Global Icon Award performed a medley of their songs.

Overall, it was a really fun show, filled with lots of great performances and a great energy that radiated through the screen.
