Why Music Needs Good Bass Players Like You?

Some musicians may wonder why bands need bass players. With heavy emphasis on the drums and guitar, why add in the bass?

The truth is that music needs good bass players. Like the drums, the bass has the power to help carry the band, and provide the musical backbone for the rest of the instruments. In music genres like the blues and jazz, the bass helps set the groove and works well with the drums. In genres like rock and heavy metal, it supplies the guitar riff to carry the song.

While many bass players aren’t front and center on the stage, they are anything but sideline musicians. They are talented, powerful players in the music industry. Many, many bass players have made a name for themselves and have become famous, with or without a band. Here are a few notable bass players:

Flea. Born Michael Peter Balzary is better known as Flea to his legions of fans. He is best known as the bassist and one of the founding members of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea and the band were actually inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Flea has also played with other bands like What Is This? and Jane’s Addiction. In 2009, Rolling Stone readers ranked Flea the 2nd best bass player of all time, only behind John Entwistle.

Victor Wooten. A multi-Grammy award winner, Wooten has been awarded “Bass Player of the Year” 3 times in a row by Bass Player magazine. He is the first person to win that honor more than once. In 2011, he was chosen as #10 on Rolling Stone’s “Top 10 Bassists of All Time” list. Wooten has been the bassist for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones since 1988, and has also enjoyed a very successful solo career. He also has his own record label, under which he releases his own music.

Stu Hamm. Hamm is an American bass player well-known for his unconventional playing style and his solo recordings. His slapping and two-handed tapping proficiency is unparalleled. He has played with some of the greatest musicians, including Frank Gambale, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vince Neil and Carl Verheyen. His music spans many genres likes country, fusion and classical.
