Success! ISINA's Kenny G Brings Smooth Jazz to Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre

For those unfamiliar, smooth jazz is rumba beats from an enormous kit of congas and bongos, meshed tightly with a snare-heavy six-piece drum kit. It’s sometimes described as beautifully walked bass lines pairing with a moaning Stratocaster. If you ever heard a calming electric piano permeating an elevator in just about anywhere in the world, then you probably experienced not just smooth jazz, but also Kenny G.

On Monday, December 4, Kenny G swooped in with his The Miracles Holiday & Hits show at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. He put on a vast array of technical solo work before finishing his trademark entrance by holding a note for several minutes in a display of the “circular breathing” method that put him in the Guinness Book of World Records.

With the band that Kenny G has been touring with for over 30 years, the first set was highlighted by a five-minute demonstration of supreme percussion-work. The second set further highlighted Kenny G’s talents, but then bassist Vail Johnson took the audience on a journey from “Amazing Grace” into a stop-and-pop slap solo that would any Red Hot Chili Pepper fan would smile with glee at. Finally, the end of the set was where Kenny G reminded everyone why he has sold 75 million records.

Kenny G’s tour continues on and maybe even arrive at a city near you!
