The Importance of a Great Song

The Importance of a Great Song

Much like a great movie or theatrical production begins with a great script, the initial essential component in a memorable recording or concert performance is a well-written song or musical composition.

For any type of up-and-coming musician, the first selection in a demo tape or the first number to be performed at an audition is crucial. It's a calling card. It's a way to find acceptance from possible allies or potential fans whose support could help an aspiring artist rise to another level. In such circumstances, the song itself needs to be potent and catchy. It should engage, touch, amuse or provoke, and, hopefully stick with the listener.

We've seen, time and again, that the ear-worm effect is powerful and can actually launch a career. One unforgettable song can be the key to unlock success for a singer, songwriter, band, DJ or producer. It's a way to brand an artist, as well as a platform to build upon.

To be fair, there's genuine alchemy in the act of creating a terrific, remarkable song. Original lyrics, whether insightful, clever or heartfelt, are wedded to a sonorous or insistent melody and the right time signature. The result is magic. It's not an easy feat. When it happens, it's downright amazing.

Sure, there are lightning-in-a-bottle circumstances when some totally timely or catch phrase is repeated over a relentless beat, and a hit happens. But those are novelties of the moment. A great song is timeless -- and crucial to those who wrote it and will play it.
