How to become a successful artist

Likely, if you’re reading this, you are already an Artist. The question you may be asking is “How do I become a star in my chosen field?”

One key factor is: by immersing yourself in the field you love and practicing.

In his book Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell examines dozens of different activities to find out how someone gets to become an expert or master in that field.

One factor that crossed all disciplines is what Gladwell called the “10,000-Hour Rule.” If you devote 10,000 hours to any single activity, you will become highly skilled.

An example is the Beatles. From 1960 to 1964, they performed live 1,200 times in Hamburg, Germany accumulating over 10,000 hours of playing time, before they returned to England.

In other words, before anyone in the English speaking world heard of them, they were already experts!

Remember, there are very few “overnight successes,” it’s likely going to take 10,000 hours. But if you are doing what you love, these hours will be joyful and pass quickly. So follow your bliss and keep on practicing! Your mastery is just hours away.
