Amoeba Music Possibly Closing

Is the iconic Amoeba Music in Hollywood closing its doors?

Amoeba Music opened in Los Angeles in 2001 and has since become the go-to indie record retailer in the Hollywood area. Fifteen years later, it still stands. But for how much longer?

Similar stores such as Tower Records have become extinct thanks to the digitization of the music library but Amoeba has managed to stay relevant for over a decade. Its popularity is due in large part to its status as a crowded hotspot that not only sells vinyls and CDs, but also puts on exclusive music events.

All of that may come to an end soon. The Hollywood building occupied by Amoeba Music has been sold to developers who plan to build a luxury mixed-use building. The 34-million dollar deal took place last October and Amoeba has been renting their space from the new owners of this building for almost a year now.

Reps for the gigantic music haven released a statement assuring its customers that Amoeba plans to stay in the building for the duration of its lease. Although they did not disclose the time remaining in said contract, they hinted that Amoeba was in talks with the new owners to potentially extend its stay once the lease is up.
