Beyoncé Steals The Show At The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards

Everyone is talking about Beyoncé at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. Not only did the legendary singer win an incredible eight moon men last night, but she also sang and danced for 15 minutes in what is widely considered to be one of the best performances of her career.

Beyoncé took to the VMA stage last night to perform excerpts from her critically acclaimed visual album Lemonade. She started off with “Pray You Catch Me” and then went on to “Hold On”. She continued with “Sorry” and “Don’t Hurt Yourself” before ending with the well-known “Formation”. Queen B performed each song in its entirety and included the spoken word poems featured on her visual album. Although the album is a representation of Beyoncé’s emotional process when confronted with the reality of her unfaithful husband, her performance at the VMAs took on an entirely different meaning.

The message of Beyoncé’s Lemonade performance was strengthened by the presence of four mothers of police brutality victims. During “Pray You Catch Me”, the background performers who were originally bathed in a white spotlight fell one by one as their light turned from white to red. It was as though each person was hit by an invisible bullet, which is a direct nod to the many African Americans who have lost their lives to a gunshot wound recently. Beyoncé closed her show with the popular “Formation” and her dancers’ formation showed a the symbol of Venus, which is closely associated with the universal sign for women.

Beyoncé’s stance was clear: she is a feminist warrior and a proud African American woman who does not shy away from using her talent and voice to shed light on issues she feels passionately about. The power of music and performance has always played a significant role in our history and Beyoncé definitely made her mark last night.
