Berlin Honors David Bowie

Berlin Honors David Bowie

Berlin has unveiled a memorial plaque in honor of David Bowie’s time in the city. The plaque features the chorus of Bowie’s Berlin-inspired “Heroes” and is outside of the flat that the icon shared with Iggy Pop.

David Bowie only lived in Berlin from 1976-1978 but the time that he spent there shaped both the city and the artist immensely. During those two years Bowie released what is known as the Berlin Trilogy: Heroes (1977), Low (1977), and Lodger (1979). The bone china plaque reads, “We can be heroes. Just for one day.” These lyrics have inspired countless amounts of people and cemented Berlin as a city of culture and creativity.

Hundreds of fans gathered in front of the infamous flat to witness Berlin Mayor, Michael Müeller, reveal the memorial display. Eager onlookers snapped pictures, shared stories, and most importantly: commemorated the life and influence of Mr. David Bowie.
