My name is Adetuke Morgan (Stage Name: Tuke Morgan) and I'm a 22 year old Vivacious Lady from Lagos, Nigeria. I was born and bred in Lagos but moved to the UK at the age of 16 to further my education. I attended an all girls boarding school in Surrey for my A levels and decided I wanted to learn the guitar after a couple of months at this school as every student seemed to be involved in some sort of extra-curricular activity.
My dad thought the Saxophone would be a better instrument for me so we reached a compromise and he paid for me to have 2 trial lessons in both instruments. I fell in LOVE with the Sax the moment I blew into it and it's been an interesting and fun musical journey ever since.
I played with the Jazz Band at this school called Woldingham and then moved to Nottingham, UK for my University Education. Whilst there studying Economics, I joined the Nottingham Saxophone Ensemble to improve my Sight Reading and started playing with my Local Church Band too. This experience helped me learn the different keys quickly as I was accompanying a Pentecostal choir where voices modulated often and without notice.
I spent my pocket money on Saxophone Lessons, Music Books and attending Saxophone related workshops in the UK. I passed my Grade 4 ABRSM Sax Practical Exam with Distinction and had the opportunity to play at shows in different cities in the UK as a solo performer or with a Church band.
I moved back to Nigeria in August 2013 with a Bsc in Economics and joined the NYSC Lagos Brigade Band during the Mandatory National Youth Service Year from November 2013 to October 2014. I was the only Female Saxophonist in this Marching Band and I greatly enjoyed my one year tenure.
I was given the opportunity to act and play the Sax in a Stage Play "Band Aid" which showed at two of the most vibrant cultural & creative Hubs in the city of Lagos, Terra Kulture & The Muson Centre . This was a great experience which allowed me merge two of my passions and it gave me great exposure too.
I released my first single "Trust" at the end of March 2015 with the help of my Church Choir Director, Mr Wole Jesutomide, who believes my talent and passion for the Sax needs to be expressed on an international scale. There aren't many Female Saxophonists in Nigeria and it gladdens my heart when young ladies tell me I inspire them because I play what is seen as a difficult instrument reserved for Males.
At first, I wished I had started learning the Sax from a young age but now I realise that the fact that I started learning well into my teens gives me the confidence to assure adults that it’s never too late to learn an Instrument.
Many Great things have happened to me because of the sax and there is no greater joy than seeing a person cry because a loved one has surprised them and gotten me to serenade them with a love song.
I would like to inspire more people to live their dreams and believe that attending ISINA will be pivotal to my growth as a musician. It will also inspire young Nigerians to work hard at their passions with diligence and persistency.
More of my stories can be found on my personal and lifestyle blog www.tukesquest.com which was chosen as one of the top 5 lifestyle blogs in the prestigious Nigerian Blog Awards, 2014 edition.
I Love the Sax because it is distinct, it stands out and through it I can express different emotions and change the mood of a place. It is what I’m known for and it has taken me to places I never expected. From performing on stage to playing at corporate events, I know this is still the beginning of my journey and attending ISINA will take me to the next level.
